It restricts changes to the existing enclosure. If modification is required, the order specifies a certified zero-clearance kit for that insert before the modification route proceeds.

Ask the contractor to explain the permitted approach for the chosen appliance and existing construction. An attractive front or a promise to “make it fit” does not answer that question. Do not strip the fireplace while waiting for the assessment.

If the enclosure cannot support the proposed project, compare a different suitable insert or an assessed built-in installation. Decide which features can remain and which project changes you are willing to accept. A smaller visual opening may be a better option than an unapproved alteration.

What belongs in the chimney and vent part of the estimate?

Ask for the assessed chimney preparation, approved vent system and access work to be stated separately from the appliance.

A chimney that carried wood smoke does not automatically provide the complete approved vent system for a gas insert. The chosen appliance has its own installation instructions. Its required liners or vent components, route and termination need confirmation for the actual chimney.
