Gas fireplace parts and repair decisions
When a gas fireplace ignores the remote, separate the handheld transmitter from the receiving controls in the appliance. A working screen proves that the handset has some power. It does not prove that the receiver has power, is in the correct mode or is compatible with that handset.
Start with the controls identified in your manual
Check the owner instructions for battery locations, approved battery types, child lock, thermostat mode and the normal operating selector. Some systems have user-serviceable batteries in more than one place. Others use an adapter or a different control arrangement.
Valor publishes different control guides and Montigo lists several remote accessories, including RX and Proflame options. A reset sequence copied from another brand can be wrong even when both remotes look similar.
Use the symptom to narrow the next step
| What happens | Useful next observation |
|---|---|
| Handset screen is blank | Check the manual’s battery type and orientation before assuming the handset failed. |
| Screen works; no fireplace response | Record the operating mode, normal receiver response and any fireplace indicator. |
| Wall control works; remote does not | Identify the handset, receiving controls and the approved pairing instructions. |
| Neither the remote nor the normal wall control works | The problem may extend beyond the remote to power, ignition or the appliance sequence. |
| Flame responds; fan or lights do not | Confirm those accessories are installed and supported by this control configuration. |
What you can check without opening the gas system
With the appliance cool and off, replace only the user-serviceable batteries described in the manual. Review temperature, timer and lock settings. Record any exact error message. Keep the old handset and a photo of its identification before buying a replacement.
Pairing is appropriate only when the correct guide permits it and the compatible controls have been identified. Do not open sealed electronics, disturb internal wiring or jump terminals. Stop ordinary troubleshooting if operation is unsafe or the fireplace will not shut down normally.
Handset replacement, receiver replacement or a matching set?
Replace the confirmed failed component. A compatible handset may be available separately; another system may require a specified matching set or an approved upgrade kit. The repair scope should state which applies and whether pairing and all installed functions are included.
A “universal” remote advertisement does not establish that flame modulation, fan control, thermostat functions or safety behaviour match your fireplace. Do not assume an on/off accessory can replace the original full-function control.
Avoid buying a remote for an ignition fault
If the receiver responds but the fireplace still cannot establish or maintain flame, diagnosis must continue into the appliance sequence. The remote may already be delivering the request correctly. Tell us what works from each normal user control so the visit starts with useful evidence.
A repair can be limited to controls when the appliance is otherwise serviceable. Unavailable approved controls or wider appliance defects justify a separate replacement comparison.
Questions before you book
Will fresh batteries always solve this?
No. Batteries are one owner check. Compatibility, operating mode, receiving controls and appliance faults can also affect response.
Does every remote need re-pairing after a power outage?
No universal rule applies. Follow the installed control’s own instructions rather than resetting by habit.
Local repair and your next decision
Bernoulli Heating & Cooling serves Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Book a diagnostic visit for a fault, choose fireplace service for planned maintenance, or compare fireplace installation and replacement when the appliance needs changing.
The existing-fireplace diagnostic appointment is $135. Repair labour, approved parts and required materials are extra. See what the diagnostic fee covers before booking.
For local appointment information, use Richmond fireplace repair, Surrey fireplace repair or Mission fireplace repair. Send the model, serial photo, city and a brief description with your request.
