Vancouver · Inserts, replacement and new fireplace projects

Gas fireplace installation in Vancouver is a building project as well as an appliance choice. Bernoulli Heating & Cooling offers free installation and replacement estimates, starting with the opening, vent route, fuel supply and the approvals that apply to your property. Bring your room goals and existing fireplace details so the proposed equipment and the work around it can be considered together.

Whether you want to retain a hearth, update a condo fireplace or create a new built-in feature, establish the feasible scope before ordering a model. For an operating fault that may be repairable, use Vancouver fireplace repair.

Start with the opening and the kind of Vancouver project

Keep an established hearth with a suitable insert

For a house in Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant or another Vancouver neighbourhood, an insert may be an option when you want to retain the existing fireplace setting. The assessment needs the front and rear opening dimensions, depth, hearth and mantel details, and an approved vent route. A masonry opening and a factory-built fireplace require their own checks. Read our wood fireplace to gas insert guide before assuming the existing shell is suitable.

Replace the appliance in a condo or townhouse

In a West End, Fairview or Downtown strata property, establish the installed model and vent arrangement before choosing the new front or flame style. Space behind the trim can differ from the visible opening. Building restrictions, access to shared areas and the permitted work at the exterior terminal can limit the replacement options. Changing the whole appliance may require different work from repairing its control or pilot.

Create a new built-in fireplace wall

A room without an existing appliance needs planning for the gas supply, venting, electrical requirements and the permitted finishing. A wide linear appearance does not establish the required depth or service access. Compare insert and built-in projects first, then choose a model that suits the measured space and the approved installation arrangement.

Confirm Vancouver permits, building conditions and strata coordination

The City states that new natural gas installations and alterations require a gas permit. The responsible authority depends on the installation. Review the BC fireplace permit guide alongside the City of Vancouver gas permit information and Technical Safety BC alteration guidance. The estimate should identify permit and inspection responsibilities for the actual scope.

Vancouver has its own Building By-law. For new construction or a major renovation, review the applicable building and energy requirements with the project team before selecting a gas appliance. An existing-home replacement quotation does not confirm a new-building design. Include the application stage and approved mechanical plans when asking about a project.

For strata property, obtain the building requirements and identify the person coordinating any common-area or exterior work. This is a separate task from the gas permit review. The Regency condo guide explains how existing venting and building restrictions can limit options. If a property has heritage protection or other restrictions, provide that information before equipment is ordered.

Resolve the vent route before the finished-wall design

Record the current appliance and visible vent information when replacing a fireplace. A new model needs its approved components, routing and termination conditions. Similar front dimensions do not establish compatibility behind the wall. Our direct vent and B-vent comparison helps explain the different arrangements. Reusing an existing vent is a decision to verify for the selected appliance.

A proposed wall terminal needs review against nearby openings and building features. A roof route introduces a different access question. Use the vent clearance guide to prepare questions about the location, then have the applicable model requirements and project conditions checked. Avoid settling cabinetry, wall depth or a television position while the route is unresolved.

In an older house, ask what work may be concealed by masonry or existing finishes. An assessment can identify the information still needed before the final scope is agreed. The older-home installation guide covers opening and access questions without treating every older property as the same installation.

Compare heat, controls and service access across suitable models

Begin with the room and the way you want to use it. A compact insert, a traditional built-in and a wide linear design solve different layout goals. Compare the useful output range, control arrangement, accessories and access for future service. Our BTU and room sizing guide explains the questions behind choosing output for the intended space.

Depending on the opening and approvals, your assessment may consider Valor or Regency inserts, or built-in options from Montigo or Town & Country. The chosen model must be confirmed for the fuel, vent, installation and current sourcing. We do not select a model simply because a brand is associated with a neighbourhood. The Valor model and component guide, Regency support guide and Montigo service configuration guide show why model details remain useful after installation.

Ask whether the blower, remote, receiver, trim and any heat-management accessories are included in the proposed package. Review what operates during a power interruption for that exact configuration. Keep a clear route to the service area in the finished design. Check the TV and fireplace clearance guide before finalising a media wall.

Where the project constraints favour a different approach, compare gas and electric fireplace options against the same room goal. Separate appearance, useful heat and building work in that comparison. Your alternative should answer the actual project limitation, such as an unavailable approved vent route.

Compare the complete installation scope, not just the appliance price

Two quotations can look different because one includes the finished-wall work and the other ends at the appliance. Use our fireplace installation cost guide to separate the equipment price from the installed project. Confirm what is known, what remains subject to assessment and who authorises changes if the scope needs to expand.

  • Appliance model, fuel, trim and the included controls or accessories.
  • Removal and disposal of the existing appliance, where applicable.
  • Approved vent components, terminal work and access arrangements.
  • Gas and electrical work included in the installation package.
  • Permit responsibilities, inspection coordination and installation checks.
  • The boundary for framing, masonry, drywall, cabinetry and paint.

Ask who coordinates each trade, who supplies the appliance and who handles a manufacturer warranty enquiry. Keep model and purchase documents together. Equipment warranty terms, labour and building finishes are separate items to clarify. A free estimate does not make every possible renovation task part of the fireplace installation scope.

Installation and replacement estimates are free. A diagnostic visit for a fault in an existing fireplace is a separate $135 appointment. Additional repair labour, parts and required materials are extra. If you are unsure whether the project begins with repair or replacement, describe the fault and your renovation goal when contacting us.

Keep the model record and plan access for future care

At handover, keep the model and serial information, operating instructions, purchase documents and relevant project records in one place. Learn the installed control arrangement and identify the owner-accessible maintenance described in the manual. Keep furniture and new cabinetry from obstructing the approved service access.

For ongoing cleaning and inspection, book Vancouver fireplace service. Technical Safety BC recommends annual servicing of heating appliances. The maintenance plan and scope should also reflect the manufacturer instructions and appliance condition. A future remote or receiver complaint or blower problem can then be discussed with the correct model record.

Send the details needed for a free Vancouver estimate

  • A wide room photo and a clear photo of the existing fireplace, if present.
  • A safe model label photo and any available installation or vent documents.
  • Opening measurements, room dimensions and your intended appearance and heating goal.
  • Strata, heritage or project approval information that could affect the work.
  • Access details and the name of any designer or finishing contractor involved.

Call 604-518-4438 or use the contact form to discuss the project. Phone support is available 24/7. Assessment and installation timing are confirmed after the proposed scope and access are reviewed. If the current appliance smells of gas, use FortisBC emergency guidance before arranging a project visit.

Vancouver fireplace installation questions

Can I replace a gas fireplace in a Vancouver condo?

Possibly. The existing appliance, approved vent arrangement, available space, building restrictions and permit requirements must be reviewed together. A unit that fits the visible opening may still be incompatible with the existing vent. Arrange building coordination before ordering equipment.

Can the existing chimney or vent be reused?

Only when its condition and the proposed appliance approval support that use. A chimney does not automatically provide an approved gas insert installation. Existing B-vent, direct vent components and terminals cannot be assumed to suit a different fireplace.

What should a Vancouver fireplace installation quote include?

Compare the appliance and accessories, removal, venting, gas and electrical work, permit responsibilities, installation checks and the agreed finishing boundary. Ask who handles masonry, drywall, cabinetry and paint. An equipment-only price is not the full project price.

Are fireplace installation estimates free?

Bernoulli offers free estimates for installation and replacement projects. Diagnosis of an operating fault in an existing fireplace is a separate $135 appointment. Additional repair labour, parts and required materials are extra. Confirm the appropriate appointment when you contact us.

Can I keep a television above the new fireplace?

That depends on the selected appliance, its approved finishing and heat-management requirements, the television instructions and the proposed layout. Review the complete design before framing or installing a mount. A display in another room does not confirm the same arrangement for your project.

Will the new fireplace heat the whole house?

Choose the intended heating task first. The room heat loss, layout, doors, control range and appliance output affect comfort and distribution. A fireplace input rating alone does not establish whole-house coverage or replace a heating plan for the property.
