Gas fireplace parts and repair decisions

A thermocouple and a thermopile are different components. On many standing-pilot fireplaces, the thermocouple helps prove the pilot while the thermopile supplies the small electrical output used by the burner-control circuit. Your fireplace may use another arrangement, so identify the model before diagnosing either part.

Which component does your fireplace actually use?

A thermocouple responds to pilot heat as part of a safety circuit. A thermopile also responds to heat but is used differently in applicable millivolt systems. Electronic-ignition fireplaces can use an electrode and flame-sensing system instead of the same standing-pilot combination. A remote control does not identify the ignition type by itself.

Observed symptom What it may involve
Pilot will not remain established Pilot flame, thermocouple or another flame-proving method, connections and the gas control.
Pilot stays on; main burner will not light Heat-request circuit, thermopile output where fitted, switch or receiver, wiring and valve.
Operation becomes unreliable when warm A repeatable connection, sensing, vent or control condition that must be tested while present.

Why replacing the sensor first can miss the fault

A weak or disturbed pilot flame can affect a sound sensor. Resistance in a switch or connection can affect burner operation. Diagnosis should establish the pilot condition, identify the installed circuit and compare the required measurements with the exact service instructions.

The technician may need to assess the circuit under operating conditions. One universal voltage number taken from another fireplace does not prove a sensor is good or bad. Do not bridge terminals or defeat the safety circuit to test an internet theory.

Service, individual sensor replacement or a pilot assembly?

Service may restore the specified pilot condition when contamination or a correctable connection is responsible. Replace a confirmed failed sensor only when it is a separately supported item for the model. A damaged or obsolete pilot arrangement may require a complete approved assembly rather than a loose sensor.

The Kingsman ZDV3624/3628/3632 legacy parts list illustrates why the serial number matters: it lists different thermocouple and pilot-system items across serial ranges. That example is a selection lesson, not a parts recommendation for other fireplaces.

What to send before asking for a replacement price

  • A clear photo of the full model and serial label, including natural gas or propane.
  • Whether the pilot stays lit and whether the main burner responds.
  • When the failure happens: during lighting, after warm-up or intermittently.
  • Any previous sensor, pilot or valve replacement invoice.

A parts-only listing does not include diagnosis, access, installation or the final safety and operating checks. A supported sensor fault normally calls for a component repair comparison before a whole-appliance estimate.

Questions before you book

Are a thermocouple and thermopile interchangeable?

No. They serve different functions in the applicable circuit and must match the manufacturer’s specification.

Can an electronic fireplace have similar symptoms?

Yes. A pilot or burner can fail for different reasons on an electronic system. Use its own flame-sensing and ignition documents.

Local repair and your next decision

Bernoulli Heating & Cooling serves Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Book a diagnostic visit for a fault, choose fireplace service for planned maintenance, or compare fireplace installation and replacement when the appliance needs changing.

The existing-fireplace diagnostic appointment is $135. Repair labour, approved parts and required materials are extra. See what the diagnostic fee covers before booking.

For local appointment information, use Delta fireplace repair, Ladner fireplace repair or Mission fireplace repair. Send the model, serial photo, city and a brief description with your request.

Use the document for the exact appliance, fuel, revision and installed accessories. The examples on this page explain decisions; they do not identify a replacement part for your fireplace.
