Water That May Be Normal
During summer cooling, the indoor coil removes moisture from the air. The resulting condensate should collect in the drain pan and leave through the condensate system.

A heat pump is allowed to produce water. It is not supposed to redecorate your ceiling with it.

What Should You Do Immediately if the Heat Pump Is Leaking Water?

This is generally different from a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is not water.

Safety Switches
Some systems use float switches designed to interrupt cooling when the condensate level becomes too high.
If the heat pump suddenly stops cooling and the drain pan contains water, the safety control may be doing exactly what it was installed to do.
Do not bypass the float switch to keep the system running.
Cause 4: Dirty Air Filter
A filter does not directly create water, but a severely restricted filter can reduce indoor airflow enough to cause the evaporator coil to freeze.
When that ice melts, the drain system may receive much more water than during normal operation.
