BC gas fireplace cost guide

A natural gas fireplace in Metro Vancouver typically costs about $0.27 to $0.66 per hour in variable gas charges when its input is between 20,000 and 50,000 BTU/h, using the FortisBC residential rate effective July 1, 2026. Your actual cost changes with the fireplace input, flame setting, run time, current rate, taxes and whether you already pay the daily basic charge for another gas appliance.

Efficiency affects how much useful heat you receive from that fuel. Running cost starts with the gas input shown on the rating plate, not the advertised room size or flame appearance.

How much does a gas fireplace cost to run in BC?

Find the fireplace input in BTU per hour, convert that fuel use to gigajoules, then multiply it by the current variable rate per GJ. Finally, multiply the hourly result by the number of hours you expect to use the fireplace.

Which FortisBC charges belong in the running-cost calculation?

For Mainland and Vancouver Island residential customers, including Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, the FortisBC residential rate effective July 1, 2026 contains four main parts.

Should the daily basic charge be included?

If the house already has an active gas account for a furnace, boiler, water heater or range, the basic charge is not normally created by running the fireplace. Use the variable charges when estimating the fireplace’s incremental fuel cost.

If natural-gas service will be opened only for the fireplace, include the basic charge when comparing the full monthly cost. At the July 2026 rate, a 31-day month adds about $13.07 before tax even if the fireplace does not run.

Why the rate needs a date

FortisBC states that commodity charges are reviewed every three months and delivery charges are reviewed annually. Use this page’s method with the current posted rate rather than treating a 2026 result as permanent.

A reusable calculation

Gas fireplace cost-per-hour formula

FortisBC bills natural gas in gigajoules. Fireplace rating plates usually show BTU per hour. Natural Resources Canada’s conversion guidance uses 1 MMBtu as approximately 1.055 GJ.

Hourly variable cost = fireplace input ÷ 1,000,000 × 1.055 × current variable price per GJ.

Example: 30,000 BTU/h fireplace

  1. Convert BTU to MMBtu. 30,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.03 MMBtu per hour.
  2. Convert MMBtu to GJ. 0.03 × 1.055 = 0.03165 GJ per hour.
  3. Apply the July 2026 variable rate. 0.03165 × $12.601 = about $0.40 per hour.
  4. Apply expected use. Three hours per day for 30 days is 90 hours, or about $36 before tax.

FortisBC explains that one gigajoule is one billion joules and is approximately equal to 277 kWh of energy. That conversion describes the fuel. It does not include fireplace efficiency.

Use the input at the setting you expect

If the rating plate lists 15,000 to 30,000 BTU/h, maximum cost uses 30,000. Low-fire cost uses 15,000. A thermostat or remote may move between these values, so monthly use will fall somewhere between a simple low-fire and high-fire estimate.

What does Fireplace Efficiency mean?

Gas fireplaces sold in Canada can carry an EnerGuide label with a Fireplace Efficiency rating, shown as FE. Natural Resources Canada describes FE as an annual efficiency measure used to compare gas fireplaces.

A higher FE rating generally means more of the fuel’s energy becomes useful indoor heat over the test method. It does not change how you calculate gas consumed at a stated input setting. The rating plate input still determines the hourly fuel rate.

Use this to estimate how much gas the fireplace consumes while operating at that setting.

FE rating

Use this to compare annual fireplace efficiency between models tested under the Canadian method.

Published output

Use certified output data, when supplied, to assess how much useful heat the model can deliver.

FE is not the same as furnace AFUE

Fireplace Efficiency and Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency use different appliance categories and test methods. Do not compare a fireplace FE percentage directly with a furnace AFUE percentage and assume the difference equals your bill savings.

A furnace distributes heat throughout the home. A fireplace usually heats one zone. Zone heating can still reduce overall use when it allows the central thermostat to be lowered without creating cold or unsafe spaces.

The table below uses a 30,000 BTU/h input and the July 2026 variable rate of $12.601/GJ. It assumes the burner stays at that input for the full operating time.

These are fuel examples, not bill guarantees. A modulating fireplace may reduce input as the room warms. Colder weather, open doors, high ceilings or a low thermostat setting can increase burner time.

Standing pilot and electrical use

Does the pilot light or fan add much cost?

Standing pilot

A standing pilot consumes gas whenever it remains lit, even when the main burner is off. The annual cost depends on the pilot input and how many months it operates. Find the pilot information in the manual or ask the service technician instead of applying a generic number.

Circulating fan

The fan uses electricity, but the burner normally accounts for the larger operating-energy cost. Fan wattage and run time differ by model. The fan can improve comfort by moving heat into the room, which may let the burner cycle off sooner.

Decorative lights and accessories

Lighting, Wi-Fi modules, powered controls and heat-distribution accessories add electrical use. Check the exact specifications when comparing two models with similar gas input.

Fair comparisons need the same heating job

Is a gas fireplace cheaper than a furnace or heat pump?

The answer depends on what space each system heats. A fireplace may be cost-effective for an occupied living room because it avoids heating the whole house to the same temperature. A central furnace or heat pump is better at maintaining bedrooms, bathrooms and distant rooms.

Natural gas and propane use different price inputs

How do propane fireplace costs differ?

Do not use the FortisBC natural-gas rate for a propane fireplace. Propane is normally purchased by volume from a supplier and can include delivery terms, tank rental, minimum fills or account charges.

Get the current delivered propane price for the property. Use the exact propane input rating, because the natural-gas and propane versions of one fireplace family may have different maximum and minimum inputs.

Reduce waste without reducing safety

How to lower gas fireplace running costs

  1. Choose the correct output range. Oversizing can overheat the room and force short operating cycles.
  2. Use thermostat or remote control properly. Let the fireplace modulate or cycle instead of running continuously at high fire.
  3. Heat the occupied zone. Lower central heat only where other rooms, plumbing and occupants remain safe and comfortable.
  4. Keep the vent terminal clear. Snow, debris and landscaping can affect safe operation.
  5. Follow the service schedule. Burner, pilot, glass, gasket, fan, controls and venting should match the manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Improve the room envelope. Air sealing, window coverings and insulation reduce the heat the zone loses.
  7. Review the gas bill correctly. Separate fixed account charges from consumption and compare similar weather periods.
  8. Investigate sudden changes. A new high bill can come from weather, rate changes, another appliance or a fireplace problem.

How much does a gas fireplace add to the monthly bill?

Is it expensive to leave a gas fireplace on all day?

Long operating hours add up. At 30,000 BTU/h, eight hours per day for 30 days is about $96 in variable gas charges using the July 2026 example rate. Continuous use should have a clear heating purpose.

Does lowering the flame reduce gas use?

Yes, when the appliance modulates to a lower input. Use the minimum and maximum BTU ratings to estimate the possible cost range.

How much gas does a standing pilot use?

Pilot input varies by appliance. Find the pilot rating in the manual or service information and multiply it by the hours the pilot stays on. Do not apply one generic annual number to every fireplace.

Does the fireplace fan use much electricity?

It adds electrical consumption, but the burner normally represents the larger operating-energy cost. Fan wattage and run time are model-specific.

What is a good gas fireplace efficiency rating?

Use the EnerGuide Fireplace Efficiency rating to compare current models, then check output range, installation and comfort. A higher percentage alone does not make the appliance right for the room.

Is Fireplace Efficiency the same as furnace AFUE?

No. FE and AFUE apply to different appliance categories and test methods. They should not be compared as though they are identical measurements.

Is a gas fireplace cheaper than a furnace?

It can reduce total heating use when it heats an occupied zone and lets you lower central heat elsewhere. A furnace remains better at distributing heat throughout the home.

Does a propane fireplace cost the same to run?

No. Propane uses a supplier’s delivered price and may include tank or delivery charges. Use the propane model input and the current property-specific propane rate.

Will servicing the fireplace reduce the gas bill?

Service can correct problems that affect safe operation and heat delivery. It does not guarantee a specific bill reduction because weather, rates, use and other appliances also affect consumption.

Why did my gas bill increase after using the fireplace?

Check operating hours, flame setting, outdoor temperature, rate changes and other gas appliances. If the increase does not match use or the fireplace behaves differently, arrange an inspection.
