Gas fireplace parts and repair decisions

A pilot assembly is more than a small flame. Depending on the fireplace, it can include a pilot burner, fuel-specific orifice, ignition electrode and flame-sensing components. A pilot failure needs the complete ignition sequence assessed before the assembly is replaced.

What the pilot symptoms can tell you

Symptom What remains to be confirmed
No spark or no ignition response Power, controls, connections, electrode and ignition-system operation.
Spark occurs; pilot does not establish The spark location, pilot delivery and applicable gas-control sequence.
Pilot establishes and drops out Flame recognition, sensor condition, connections and other operating conditions.
Pilot remains lit; main burner does not follow The burner request and control circuit; the pilot assembly may not be the failed item.

What safe observations help diagnosis?

Read the lighting instructions for the exact model and note what you see through the installed glass. Record an error message, whether there is clicking, and whether the flame establishes. Tell the technician about seasonal shutdown, servicing or recent work nearby.

Stop repeated attempts when ignition does not complete. Follow the manual’s permitted attempts and shutdown instructions. Do not loosen the pilot tube, clean an orifice with a drill, alter the flame or operate a sealed fireplace with the glass removed.

When pilot service can be enough

An approved service procedure can sometimes correct contamination or a connection condition without a new assembly. The work still needs to establish reliable ignition and flame recognition afterwards. A pilot that lights once and fails again has not been shown to operate reliably.

The repair decision should distinguish the pilot hardware from the electrical supply, control and gas valve. Napoleon’s HD81-1 troubleshooting documentation separates pilot ignition and flame-sensing conditions, illustrating why the symptom alone is insufficient.

When an approved replacement is needed

Confirmed damaged electrodes, insulation, sensors, tubing or pilot hardware may require a supported individual part or complete assembly. Selection depends on the model, fuel and service documentation. The manufacturer decides what is separately replaceable.

For a natural-gas or propane appliance, use the specified configuration. A kit from another model is not approved because the mounting holes line up. If the required assembly is unavailable, compare supported alternatives with an appliance replacement estimate before committing to an improvised repair.

What should the quotation cover?

  • The confirmed fault and whether service or replacement is proposed.
  • The compatible part or assembly and its availability.
  • Access, labour, any required return visit and the final ignition and safety checks.

A complete repair estimate is more useful than a pilot-kit price by itself. Keep the model and serial photo with any previous pilot repair invoice.

Questions before you book

Does a pilot that goes out always need a new assembly?

No. The cause can lie in flame sensing, connections, gas controls or other conditions. Confirm the fault first.

Can I change the pilot orifice to improve the flame?

That is a model-specific gas-service task for a qualified person. It is not a homeowner adjustment.

Local repair and your next decision

Bernoulli Heating & Cooling serves Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Book a diagnostic visit for a fault, choose fireplace service for planned maintenance, or compare fireplace installation and replacement when the appliance needs changing.

The existing-fireplace diagnostic appointment is $135. Repair labour, approved parts and required materials are extra. See what the diagnostic fee covers before booking.

For local appointment information, use Coquitlam fireplace repair, Abbotsford fireplace repair or Langley fireplace repair. Send the model, serial photo, city and a brief description with your request.

Use the document for the exact appliance, fuel, revision and installed accessories. The examples on this page explain decisions; they do not identify a replacement part for your fireplace.
